Betty E. Birrell

Kinsman, Ohio - Betty E. Birrell, died on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at her home. She was born on March 18, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of Della (Markle) and Thomas Robert Collins. Betty was a 1938 graduate of Eastern High School in Detroit, Michigan. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit and finished her Bachelor's degree at Youngstown College. Betty earned her Master's Degree in reading at Kent State University. She married Adam Bone who was killed in action on D-Day. Betty married Robert George Birrell, Sr. on October 3, 1947. She was a teacher for the Joseph Badger School System for many years, retiring in 1980 and was responsible for starting the Title 1 reading program at Badger. In her retirement Betty assisted her husband at the A. G. Birrell Company in Kinsman. She was a member of the Kinsman Presbyterian Church since moving to Kinsman in 1947. Betty was a Sunday School Teacher for many years and also served as Deacon, Trustee and was a member of Session. She served on the Board of the Kinsman Free Public Library, was a member and past president of the former Business and Professional Women Association, and was a member of the Kinsman Order of Eastern Star. Betty loved to read and to travel. She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Adam Bone; her second husband, Bob Birrell; a son Donald Bone; a daughter, Nancy Birrell; two sisters, Shirley Collins and Ruth Henke and a brother, Roy Collins. Survivors include two sons, Robert G. Birrell, Jr. of Kinsman, Ohio and Andrew G. (Lisa) Birrell of Key West, Florida; a sister, June (James) Arby of Naples, Florida; two granddaughters, Emily and Nicole; and a great granddaughter, Makyla. The family will be receiving friends at a "Meet & Greet" on Sunday, May 5, 2013, from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at the Kinsman Presbyterian Church, 6383 Church St., Kinsman,OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church, The Kinsman Historical Society, or to The Friends of the Kinsman Library.
