Cherry Valley, Ohio - Blanche E. DeJong, age 90, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 24, 2010. She was born on September 9, 1919, in Kinsman, Ohio, the daughter of the late Margaret (Sample) and Walter J. Waid. Mrs. DeJong graduated from the three year high school program of New Lyme in 1936 and when they added the forth year, she graduated from New Lyme in 1937. She was a 1943 graduate of the Cleveland Bible College (now Malone College) and a 1947 graduate of Youngstown Hospital Association School of Nursing. Mrs. DeJong served as a cadet nurse during World War II. She worked for Charlotte Nursing Home of Rock Creek, Ohio, for over twenty years. On April 21, 1951, she married Wiebe DeJong in Lynden, Washington. It was then they moved to Cherry Valley. Mrs. DeJong was a very active member of the Methodist Church. She belonged to the United Methodist Women, was active in helping with Vacation Bible School, and in her eighties served as secretary to the Methodist Conference. Mrs. DeJong also was a member of the Cherry Valley Mothers Club, the Andover Mystery Club and was a former board member of Country Neighbor. She enjoyed flower gardening and flower arranging, doing needlepoint and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of forty-six years Wiebe DeJong, who died on June 14,1997; three sisters, Margaret Waid, Helen Tucker, and Luella Hotsenpillar; and two brothers, Harland and Charles Waid. Survivors include two daughters, Esther B. (Harley Winer) DeJong of New Orleans, Louisiana and Helen R. (Brad) Cole of Andover, Ohio; a son, Michael J. DeJong of Cherry Valley, Ohio; four grandchildren, Maaike Jenkins, Jacob Cole, Sr., Sol Winer and Marga DeJong; four great grandchildren, Jacob, Grayson, Rowen, Rian; and a sister, Theodora Smith of Orwell, Ohio. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 10:30am at Cherry Valley Methodist Church, State Route 6, Cherry Valley, Ohio, with Pastor Pat Seger officiating. Private Burial will be held in Cherry Valley Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 26, 2010 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the church.
