Charles A. Starling, Sr., age 75, of Gustavus Township, OH, died Saturday, December 8, 2012, at UPMC Horizon Hospital in Greenville, PA. He was born January 19, 1937, in Vernon, Ohio, a son of Alvin J. and Rose L. (Parthemer) Starling. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Starling was a 1955 graduate of Gustavus School. While in high school he worked on Harlan Sharp's horse farm helping with race horses and sometimes going to the tracks with him. He also worked at Sharp's Chevrolet garage and Wean Manufacturing; was service manager at A.G. Birrell's in Kinsman; and worked for Hunter's Auto Wrecking for 45 years. The majority of his employment was as head bus mechanic for Badger School District. Mr. Starling was a member of the Gustavus Lodge #442 F & AM; and he enjoyed NASCAR, and restoring cars and lawn mowers. Mr. Starling is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gertrude E. (Marshall) Starling, whom he married Dec. 15, 1956, of Gustavus Township, OH; and to this union were born seven children that survive him, Cynthia (Ray) Edison of Conneautville, PA, Catherine (Chuck) Cook of Vernon Township, OH, Cheryl (Randy) Brewer of Vernon Township, OH, Carla (Randy) Burr of Gustavus Township, OH, Charles A. Starling, Jr. of Gustavus Township, OH, Carlon Scott Starling of Gustavus Township, OH, and Crystal (Kurt) Swym of Gustavus Township, OH; 15 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; one brother, Roy (Ruth) Starling of Kinsman, OH; one sister, Clara Somerville of Cortland, OH; special sister-in-law, Mavis Starling of Kinsman, OH; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter; one brother, Earl Starling; and one sister, Barbara Coxson. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 PM at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 8569 Main St., Kinsman,OH, with Masonic rites at 4:00 PM. A funeral service will follow with Rev. Ronald Spore, of the Gustavus Federated Church, officiating. A private interment of cremated remains will take place in Gustavus Cemetery.
