CLARE N. CHAPMAN, age 87, of Richmond township, Ohio, died Friday, December 14, 2007, at his home. He was born January 6, 1920, in Dicksonburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Fred C. and Effie (North) Chapman. A long time area resident, Clare was a graduate of Conneautville High School in Conneautville, PA. He owned and operated a dairy farm in Richmond; was employed by Shellito's Potato Farm for many years; and was self employed as a milk and livestock hauler. Clare was a foster parent to many children over the years. He was a member of the Richmond United Methodist Church, where he served on the church Board. He also served on the CDRM (Council for Dynamic Rural Ministry). Clare was a member of the Richfield Grange; the Ashtabula County Cooperative Extension Advisory Committee; and was a Laker Ruritan, where he held several offices. Clare served on the Richmond School Board before and during the consolidation; and was a Richmond Township Trustee for many years. He was a 4-H Advisor and was elected into the 4-H Hall of Fame. Clare was a Draft Horse Organization member; and he initiated building the draft horse barn and program at the Ashtabula County fairgrounds. Clare donated his time every year taking the Happy Hearts children on a hayride. He served on the Ashtabula County Fair Board, where he served as president. He especially enjoyed family get togethers and his draft horses. Clare married Alice E. (Smith) on July 20, 1940, and she precedes him in death on August 15, 1989. He married his second wife, Shirley P. Dick, on April 18, 1992. She died April 3, 2006. Also preceding him in death are his parents; and one sister, Ruth McMichael. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Carolyn) Chapman of Pierpont,OH, and Bruce (Lu Ann) Chapman of Jefferson, OH; two daughters, Martha (John) Laurila of Ashtabula,OH, and Joyce Smith of Andover, OH; two step sons, Kenneth Dick of Williamsfield, OH, and Ralph (Deborah Olin) Dick of Williamsfield, OH; one step daughter, Roberta Griffith of Wickliffe, OH; seventeen grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many additional family members. A very special thanks to Allen and Theresa Slater and other friends and neighbors. A funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 10 A.M. at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH. Burial will follow in Dicksonburg Cemetery, Dicksonburg, PA. Calling hours will be on Monday, December 17th from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
