David L. Rice, age 85, of Andover, Ohio, died Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at the Andover Village Retirement Community. He was born March 4, 1925, in Rock Creek, Ohio, a son of Chauncey J. and Rosa C. (Kampf) Rice. Formerly of Rock Creek, Mr. Rice was a 1943 graduate of Rock Creek High School. A Veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, he was a mortar gunner in the 28th Infantry serving in Rhineland of Central Europe. Following his service, Mr. Rice married Carlie A. (Burlingham) on June 19, 1948. He began operating his dairy farm in Andover in 1960 and raised jersey cattle. Mr. Rice was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Andover; a charter member of the Rock Creek VFW; a lifetime member of the Percy D. Hyatt Post 226, American Legion, Andover; and past member of the Maple Grove Grange in Rock Creek. He formerly served on the board of directors of the M.P.F., the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau, the DAIA, and the F.H.A. He also served as an Andover Township Trustee for 22 years. His hobbies included woodworking and he loved his time with his family. Mr. Rice is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carlie A. Rice, of Andover; his son, Jan A. (Beth) Rice, of Canal Winchester, OH; his sister, Mildred Grant, of Downers Grove, IL; and his brother, Alan Rice, of Rock Creek, OH. He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeffrey D. Rice in 1990; his two sisters, June Lawson and Esther Rice; and his brother, Lawrence Rice. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH, with Rev. Vernon Palo officiating. Burial will follow in West Andover Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday, October 29th from 6 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
