Donald J. Palmer, age 93, a lifetime Cherry Valley Township resident, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at his home. He was born May 30, 1915, in Cherry Valley Township, the son of Roy and Mabel (Sweet) Palmer; and was a graduate of the Andover High School. He was a dairy farmer for many years and later went into the carpentry business working for Kitchen Trends for ten years out of Warren, Ohio, where he installed many beautiful kitchens. He was well known for his woodworking skills. He made many beautiful items for family, friends and area churches. He was always willing to lend a hand whether it was in the fields, home additions, or wherever else he was needed. "Call Dad" was the thing to do whenever anything needed fixed. Donald served on the New Lyme and Andover School Boards for fourteen years. He was a member of the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene where he faithfully attended. In his earlier years he was very active in the Cherry Valley Methodist Church and later the Cherry Valley Church of the Nazarene. Donald married Janet E. (Clymer) Palmer on May 30, 1939, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 1997. Also preceding him in death are his son, Roger Palmer in 1964; his son in law, David Svenson in 2006; and his two brothers, Robert and Neil Palmer. He is survived by a daughter, Laura Svenson of Denmark Township,OH, a son, Keith (Norma) Palmer of Cherry Valley Township,OH, a son, Lee (Sheryle) Palmer of Palm City, FL, a son, Fred (Karen) Palmer of Cherry Valley Township, OH, a daughter, Elma (Ben) Williams of Oklahoma City, OK, a daughter, Ruth Palmer of Dorset, OH; sixteen grandchildren; and thirty great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 18, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at the Cherry Valley Church of the Nazarene, 3410 St. Rt. 6, Cherry Valley, Ohio with Pastor Shirley Deemer and Rev. Richard Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Cherry Valley Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, May 17th from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH.
