Elizabeth M. "Betty" Jenkins

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Jenkins, age 89, of Andover, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Andover Village Retirement Community. She was born March 4, 1921, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and Pauline (Adams) Powell. She was a 1938 graduate of Aliquippa High School and came to Andover shortly thereafter. On August 9, 1941 she married Clifford D. "Gomer" Jenkins. Mrs. Jenkins traveled for three years during World War II to be near her husband who served in the Army. Betty loved her church, the First Congregational United Church of Christ. She was formerly a deaconess and choir member; and later served almost sixteen years as Financial Secretary for the church. Betty served as a Cub Scout den mother; room mother; was the last P.T.A. president before the consolidation; was a correspondent for the Andover area in the Star Beacon. She was employed by the General Electric plant in Andover for several years; and was their first check inspector. Her hobbies included playing the organ, crafts, making and collecting angels, reading, flower gardening, and was an avid Steelers fan. Betty enjoyed and loved her family. She is survived by her son, Richard A. Jenkins, of Espyville, PA; her grandson, R.J. Jenkins, of Midland, TX; a great granddaughter, Berkley Jenkins; sister, Frances Martin, of Andover, OH; brother, Arthur Powell, of Aliquippa, PA; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on March 14, 2001; daughter-in-law, Cathy Jenkins; three sisters, Laura Jean Regec, twin sister, Lois Jane Gormley, and Anna Mae Kline; and four brothers, Richard, Edward, William, and Robert Powell. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 170 East Main St., with Rev. Ted Michaelsen and Rev. Scott Ressman officiating. A graveside service for burial of cremated remains will take place following in Maple Grove Cemetery, Andover.
