Ethel Ina Coursen Scriven, 103, of 1216 Fifth Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio, died at Park Vista Retirement Community, on August 19, 2004. Mrs. Scriven was born on Dec. 10, 1900, in Padanaram, OH the daughter of Miner Sidney and Gertrude Anson (Baker) Coursen. She was a graduate of Kinsman High School, and earned a B.A. from Youngstown University and a Masters degree from Columbia University, New York. In 1920 she became an elementary teacher at te Gordon & Penhale Schools in Youngstown. Later she became a Principal at the Buckeye and Jackson Schools, until 1958 when she was chosen as the first Principal at the newly built Paul C. Bunn School in Youngstown. She retired from school work in 1963 after serving as teacher for 26 years and as Principal for 17 years. After retiring, she worked for Youngstown State University as a classroom consultant for students who would be graduating with teaching degrees. She married Harold W. Scriven in 1927, he passed away in 1930. She enjoyed hosting at her Chautauqua-On-The-Lake cottage "Lake Side Lodge". It was a beautiful spot on the water front, "homey" to the many people from all over the country, especially the many Youngstowners who came for the entire summer. Mrs. Scriven had a beautiful home in the thermal belt of Tucson, Arizona where she spent each winter, driving to and from using a different route, thus visiting every state in the United States. She also enjoyed traveling outside the States. Mrs. Scriven was a member of the Kinsman Presbyterian Church, the local, state and National Teacher Organizations; Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Kinsman Bay View Club and a retired member of the Youngstown Women's Federated Clubs and Ganesa Club. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold, Sisters Edythe E. Davis, Esther C. Cratsley, twins Ruth M. Coursen & Robert J. Coursen, Brothers Cloy M. Coursen and Miner C. Coursen. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at Kinsman Cemetery, Church Street, Kinsman, with Rev. Larry A. Myers officiating. Arrangements handled by Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St. Kinsman, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kinsman Public Library Childrens Dept.
