EVELYN H. HUGO, age 89, of Wayne township, Ohio, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Ashtabula County Medical Center in Ashtabula, Ohio. She was born July 8, 1918, at her parents' home in Richmond township, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Emory Lavern Hays and Iva Dell (Carpenter) Hays. She attended the Townville Vocational School in grades 9 through 12 where she graduated in 1935. Before obtaining her B.S. in Education from Edinboro State Teachers College in 1941, Evelyn taught for four years. She taught in Steuben township outside of Townville in a one room school teaching eight grades at Beardsley School. In 1941 Evelyn went to Spring Creek, PA, as principal and to teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. From 1942 to 1945 she taught in Hartsgrove. On June 2, 1945, she married Ray A. Hugo at her parents' home in Townville, PA, and moved to Williamsfield,OH. Evelyn began teaching in Williamsfield in the fall of 1953 and continued there until 1973. She taught for six more years in Andover before retiring after 34 years of teaching mostly 1st grade. Evelyn was a member of the Williamsfield United Methodist Church; a Study Club member since the late 1950's; and a member of the Covered Bridge Stitchers since 1996. In her younger years she enjoyed target shooting and cross country skiing in Edinboro, PA. She loved being with her children and many generations of grandchildren; keeping in touch with former students; quilting; and reading. She is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ray, on June 1, 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Christine (Bob) Lipps of Wayne township, OH, a son, Howard (Pam) Hugo of Williamsfield,OH, a daughter, Catherine (Howard) Miller of Seattle, WA, a son, Carl Hugo of Knoxville, MD; ten grandchildren, Karen, Laura, Megan, Brian, Alison, Kyle, Jeremy, Joshua, Kurt, and Kara; twelve great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2008, at 8:00 P.M. at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH. Cremation will follow the service. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5:30 P.M. until the time of service.
