Gene J. Johnson

Gene J. Johnson, Sr., age 88, of Andover, passed peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 8, 2014. He was born June 18, 1926, in Conneaut, Ohio, a son of Lucy (Tinan) Johnson. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army during World War II followed by his return to Andover School where he graduated in 1947. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War from July 1951 until July of 1954. As a veteran of two wars, Mr. Johnson was proud of his service. Mr. Johnson then married his wife, Phyllis J. (Drnek) on February 5, 1955. They were residents of Woodbridge, Virginia from 1970 until moving to Williamsfield, Ohio in 1994. Mr. Johnson has been an Andover resident for just the past few years. He was a printer and a 65 year member of the Typographical Union. At one time, Mr. Johnson was the sole printer for the Andover Citizen. He was a lifetime member of the VFW; was an avid reader and enjoyed playing harmonica. He was a devoted husband and father being survived by his daughter, Cheryl A. (Frank) Watkins of Lewisburg, WV, his son, Gene J. (Elizabeth) Johnson, Jr. of Annandale, VA, his son, Mark A. (Betty) Johnson of Springfield, VA, his son, Kevin L. (Gina) Johnson of Westerville, OH, his daughter, Teresa L. (Mike) Swan of Andover, OH, his daughter, Colleen S. (Tim) Wertz of Dale City, VA, his son, Jason P. "Double" Johnson of Andover, OH; his 15 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Phyllis J. Johnson on February 9, 2010. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH, where military honors will be observed.
