Grace T. Switzer, 91 yrs old, of Andover, Ohio, died on Friday, January 9, 2004, at Jefferson Geriatric Center in Jefferson, Ohio. Grace was born on October 20, 1912, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, to the late George Thayer and the late Eva (Harris) Thayer. Mrs. Switzer, a long time Andover resident, was a graduate of Chagrin Falls High School in 1930 and Ohio University in 1934. After graduation, she came to the area to teach at the Wayne and Williamsfield schools until 1944. She married Dr. Ernest Switzer on June 6, 1942, and helped him establish and run his veterinary practice in Andover until his death in December 1974. She helped establish the Country Neighbor program, becoming one of the first directors and retiring in 1984. She was a member of Andover First Congregational United Church of Christ since 1942, Andover School Board from 1948-1959 and then the Pymatuning Valley School Board from 1960-1964, Andover Smokestacks (Fireman's Auxillary), honorary Andover Volunteer Fire Department member, Ashtabula County Council on Aging from 1979-1989, Ashtabula County Transportation System Board of Directors from 1985-2003, Andover Police Auxillary, Andover Public Library Board of Trustees from 1975-2003, where she was named Secretary Emeritus, and the Andover Mardi Club for over 50 years. She helped organize the Andover 55 and Over Club and Red Cross Bloodmobile drives. Mrs. Switzer was named Ashtabula County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1984 and nominated in 2003. She enjoyed quilting, reading and gardening. She is survived by her three sons, Thad (Vicky) Switzer of Vincentown, NJ; John "Jack" (Janice) Switzer of Brunswick, OH; Edward (Becky) Switzer of Andover, OH; her daughter, Janice (Dennis Abbuhl) Switzer of Andover, OH; her sister, Lois Wantz of Holmes Beach, FL; and four grandsons, Chad Switzer, Timothy Switzer, William Abbuhl, and Evan Abbuhl. Funeral services will be held at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect Street, Andover on Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at 11:00am. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery, Andover. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2004, from 4-8pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
