Grace E. York

Grace Evelyn York, age 94, of Andover, Ohio, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at her home. She was born July 19, 1917, in Rome, Ohio, a daughter of Emery L. and Nellie (Addicott) Clute. Shortly after she was born her family moved to a farm in Wayne where she graduated from high school in 1935. She attended Warren Business College; and worked as a secretary until she married Kenneth York on May 20, 1938. During the war she helped make shells at Mullins Manufacturing Co. She and her husband owned and operated a restaurant in Andover for several years. She was a member of the Wayne Historical Society; and a Friend of the Andover Public Library. Grace went on to work as a cook for a family in Chicago. She would work for five months out of the year which gave her the opportunity to travel. She touched ground in all 50 states, spent time in Greece, Switzerland, Cancun, and traveled through the Panama Canal. Grace loved her family; and she enjoyed making clothing, knitting sweaters, mittens, and hats. She also was an avid quilter. Grace is survived by a daughter, Sandra Stilson, with whom she resided with in Andover; three sons, Ronald (Virgy) York of Espyville, PA, Donald (Cindy) York of New Port Richey, FL, and Russell (Laura) York of Andover; her daughter, Lorna Shumaker of Greensboro, NC; 15 Grandchildren; 3 Step Grandchildren; 21Great Grandchildren; 5 Step Great Grandchildren; and 12 Great-great Grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Luella Clute. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth H. York; her grandson, Brett York; two brothers, Maurice Clute and Paul Clute; and a long time friend, Art Westervelt. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 5:00 PM at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH, with Rev. Ted Michalsen officiating.
