Andover, Ohio HARRY W. "BILL" SERVICE, age 76 of Andover, Ohio died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006 at UPMC Horizon Hospital in Greenville, Pa. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio on August 22, 1929 to Harry Smith Service and Laura Aleeta (Mowry) Service. Bill was a 1947 graduate of Andover High School and sailed on the Great Lakes with the Pittsburgh Steamship Line (a division of US Steel) from the fall of 1947 to July of 1958. He was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the US Army from Jan. 1951 to Dec. of 1952. In the winter of 1954-1955 Bill studied for and received his pilot's license for operator of the ore boats. He recieved the rank of 3rd mate with the Pittsburgh Steamship LIne. He left the Lakes in July of 1958 to start work with the Andover School System (later the Pymatuning Valley Schools in 1961) as a maintenance /bus driver. He was later promoted to the position of Business Manager. When his father passed away in 1964, he left the school system and took over the operation of the family farm and a small fertilizer business. In Jan. 1980, his wife and he formed a partnership with Al Lehmkuhl and James Kreglow of Bellevue, Ohio. This partnership purchased an existing Andover fertilizer plant and started Andover Crop Service, Inc. He was the General Manager of this business until his retirement in Jan. 1988. His wife and he had sold their share of the business to their partners in Dec.1986. Bill was a lifetime Andover resident but spent most of his winters in Estero, Florida since 1991. He formerly served as an Andover Township Trustee; served on the Ashtabula County Soil and Water Conservation Board in the 1970's; served on the Ashtabula County Board of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (648 Board). He was preceded in death by his father in April of 1964 and his brother-in-law, Earl Fenton in 1998. Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Andover. Bill's interests included the Ashtabula County Fair Market Animal Sale, studying the Mutual Funds, shuffle boarding in Florida, working on keeping his property up, and traveling. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Mary (Jerome) Service whom he married on Dec. 30, 1955 in Andover, Ohio; his mother, Aleeta Service of Greenville, PA.; his sister, Marjorie E. Fenton of Andover; nieces Gail (Fenton) Cochoff of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Donna (Fenton) Neff of Quarryville, PA; his wife's nephews, Mark & Linc Jerome; and neices, Karan (Jerome) Cook, Lori Jerome, and Kelly Jerome; and Bill's very close friend who was "like my son", Charlie Rose of Andover. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan.9, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover, Ohio with Rev. Peter Elencovf and Brian Hall officiating. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the funeral home. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions in Bill's memory be given to the Andover Foundation, Inc.
