Dorset - Herbert D. Stoffel, age 94, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, in Cortland, OH. Born on June 27, 1914 in Cleveland, the son of the late Hallah (Bishop) and George Stoffel. Herb grew up in Cleveland, graduating from Collinwood High School in 1932. Herb's plans to attend college were thwarted as all the family's income and savings were used to save their home during the Great Depression. He worked at an apple orchard for $1 a day while boarding with family in Harpersfield. On February 14, 1937 he married a nursing Student, Ruth Carr, whose family owned a farm in Richmond Twp. He dairy farmed until 1941, moving back to Cleveland at that time. Herb worked for Parker Appliance, as a precision tool grinder during WWII. He was deferred from combat service as his effort in providing aircraft parts was in great demand. In 1944 he moved his family back to Richmond Twp. to farm with his father-in-law. The family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico in 1949 and he became employed working in a potash mine, becoming a journeyman mechanic. Three years later returning to Richmond Twp. as a dairy farmer he became one of the county's most productive herdsmen . He was twice recognized as having the best production in Ashtabula County, and was recognized as one of Ohio's best. Herb served on the Board of COBA for many years. In 1972 his daughter, Chris and husband Fred Kniesly, joined in a partnership until 1992. During this period Herb and Ruth were able to travel to many destinations, including Nova Scotia, Alaska and Hawaii. Herb was a member of the Leon United Methodist Church, a 75 year member of the Richmond Grange, and a member of Eddy (NM) Lodge Freemasons. He is survived by son James C. (Marne) of Andover, daughters Christine (Fred) Kniesly, of Apache Junction, Az, and Julia Pasker of Lebanon, Pa., 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 yrs., Ruth, his son George D. and Son-in-Law David Pasker. Calling hours will be Monday, December 29th from 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at the Leon United Methodist Church . Burial of cremated remains will be in West Andover Cemetery.
