Howard R. Newport, age 99, of Howland, Ohio, died peacefully Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Shepherd of the Valley. He was born August 27, 1911, in Youngstown,Ohio, a son of John C. and Hazel (Barnes) Newport. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Newport was a 1929 graduate of Williamsfield High School. He was employed by Packard Electric, retiring in 1971. He was a fifty year member of the Kinsman Presbyterian Church, where he belonged to the choir, session, and served as a deacon and trustee. He also was a member of the Kinsman-Vernon Optimist Club; the Kinsman Senior Citizens Site; and a lifetime member of the Optimist International. His hobbies included gardening, dancing, traveling, and fishing. He enjoyed spending several winters in Florida with his first wife, Wava; and enjoyed evening cruises on the lake in his boat. Mr. Newport had a passion for singing; and he would perform at Shepherd of the Valley for the residents. Mr. Newport married Wava (Lee) Newport on July 3, 1938; and she preceded him in death in March of 1989. He married Ella (Overly) Newport on March 9, 1993; and she died February of 2006. Also preceding him in death are his great granddaughter, Kylie Marie Randall; his brother, John Newport; and his sister, Mildred Ridge. He is survived by his three daughters, Rebecca (Charles) Barr of Clyde, OH, Sue (James) Papp of Springfield,OH, and Nancy (John) Davis of Kinsman,OH; his sister, Dorothy Forbush of North Canton,OH; his eight grandchildren; his eleven great grandchildren; and his one great-great grandchild. Mr. Newport's family would like to thank everyone at Shepherd of the Valley for all the care he was given over the years. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 8569 Main St., Kinsman,OH, with Rev. James Brandis officiating. Calling hours will be Sunday from 12 Noon until the time of service. A private burial will take place in West Williamsfield Cemetery.
