Gustavus, Ohio - Hyla L. Wood, age 102, died on Monday, October 25, 2010. She was born on November 5, 1907, in Clarksfield, Ohio, the daughter of the late Bertha B. (Harland) and Benjamin W. McClaflin. A resident of Gustavus, Ohio since 1965, Mrs. Wood graduated from New London High School and Ohio University. She taught school in Clarksfield, Ohio and in Ashtabula, Ohio. On June 29, 1940, she married Charles C. Wood. Mrs. Wood is a member of the Gustavus Federated Church, the Gustavus You & I Club and the Gustavus Garden Club. She enjoyed cooking and gardening and had an eye to make every meal look like it was a holiday meal. Mrs. Wood is preceded in death by her husband; four sisters, Hope Ferguson, Helen Williams, Hazel Bracy and Hester Schmidt and two brothers, Harland and Harold McClaflin. Survivors include two sons, William F. Wood of Gustavus, Ohio and Robert C. (Cynthia) Wood of Wayne, Ohio; a granddaughter, Tammy Wood of East Palestine, Ohio; a grandson, Lt. Col. Steven A. (Laurie) Wood of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Hale McClaflin and two great granddaughters, Aly and Carlie Wood. A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 11:00am at Perry Cemetery on Center Road in Perry, Ohio with Rev. Karl Bucey officiating. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 31, 2010 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main Street, Kinsman, Ohio.
