James Daniel Mathews, age 89, a native of Kinsman, Ohio, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, May 18, 2016. He was born April 29, 1927, in Kinsman, Ohio to James C. and Mildred (Giddings) Mathews. He served in the US Navy from April of 1945 to August of 1947 after graduating from Kinsman High School. He attended Union College in Schenectady, NY and Bowling Green State University before returning to operate the family farm with his father. In 1952, he married his first wife, Evelyn Noxon, with whom he raised two children. Following her death in 1974, he met and married his second wife, Gloria Griffith Peel, in 1975. Gloria passed away April 18, 2016. Dan was a 70 year member of the Harry Lees American Legion Post, member of the Kinsman Presbyterian Church, a former Kinsman Township Trustee, and enjoyed golfing, reading, and watching Jeopardy. Dan was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; a brother, Charles Frederick, two sisters, Marion (Schnaithmann) and Florence and two half-sisters Nellie and Beulah. Surviving him are his two children, Harold (Ann) Mathews of Perrysburg, Ohio and Amy (Alan) Viets of Hamilton, Ohio; two stepsons, John L Peel Jr. of Palm Gardens, Florida, and Jerome L. Peel Sr. of Jupiter, Florida; grandchildren Rachel(Josh)Heath of Ludowici, Georgia, Mark Mathews of Dublin, Ohio, Brooke Mathews of Perrysburg, Ohio, Mary Viets of Covington, Kentucky and Aaron(Mary)Viets of Whitefish Bay, Wisconson; two step-grandchildren, Linslee and Jerome L. Peel Jr.; great-grandson, Jackson Heath; three sisters, Virginia (Lee) of Yulee, Florida, Marjorie (Jim) Mauk of Cortland, Ohio and Barb Ege of Kinsman, Ohio and a brother, David (Pat) Mathews of Kinsman, Ohio. A combined service for Dan & Gloria will be held at on Monday, May 30, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the Kinsman Presbyterian Church, 6383 Church Street, Kinsman, OH. Memorial gifts may be given to Kinsman Presbyterian Church, Harry Lees American Legion Post, or the Kinsman Historical Society.
