San Diego, California - Jess W. Roberts, age 86, died on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at San Diego Hospice. He was born on March 10, 1923, in Iaeger, West Virginia, the son of Rachel A. and Mander Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a 1941 graduate of Iaeger High School. He joined the United States Navy and served during World War II. On March 2, 1946, Mr. Roberts married Mary M. Workman. She died on April 3, 1984. He owned and operated Roberts Realty of Bristolville, Ohio. Mr. Roberts was the custodian for Maplewood High School for over eighteen years, retiring in 1986. He attended Greene Nazarene Church and was a member of St. Dunstan Episcopal church of San Diego, California. Mr. Roberts was a charter member of the Greene Volunteer Fire Department, where he was their first president. He was formerly the Leader of Boy Scout Troop 75 of Greene and coached little league for many years. He was member of the Gustavus F & AM Lodge No. 442 where he was past Master, and past Worthy Patron of the former Kinsman Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Cortland Moose Lodge No. 1012, the Elks Lodge No. 1812 of San Diego, Al Bahr Temple of Shriners of San Diego, American Legion Post No. 282 and VFW Post No 3787, both of San Diego, California. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary; a grandson, Christopher Roberts; an infant sister Ruby Roberts; a sister, Blanche Roberts and a brother, Freddie Roberts. Survivors include two daughters, Linda D. (William) Daugherty of Cortland, Ohio and Jodi L. Roberts of San Diego, California; three sons, Robert E. Roberts of Toronto, Ohio, James W. (Marilyn) Roberts of Sagamore Hills, Ohio and Ronnie J. (Shelly) Roberts of Cortland, Ohio; four sisters, Betty Robertson of Bedford Heights, Ohio, Gloria (William) Lantzer and Bernice Crowder both of San Diego, California and Barbara (Bob) Roberts of Ocala, Florida; two brothers, James Roberts of Bedford, Ohio and George (Shirle) Roberts of Lakeview, New York; thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 11:00am at Baumgardner Funeral Home 8569 Main Street, Kinsman, Ohio, with Rev. Donna L. Maree officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, in Greene, Ohio. Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 15th from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. Masonic services will be held at 8:00pm at the funeral home.
