Mecca, Ohio - On November 15, 2014, Joseph J. Letwen, age 91, passed away surrounded by his family. He was born on March 27, 1923, in Mecca, Ohio, to Sophie (Pennar) and John Letwen. He was fond of saying he was born in the middle of Mosquito Lake. His parents owned the land now covered in water. Joe graduated from Mecca High School in 1942. After graduation he went into custom farming with his brother Ted, baling hay and filling silos. On June 6, 1952 he married Mary Elizabeth Burns. They have a daughter, Barbara Jo Clemson and two grandchildren, Christen and Craig. Joe attended every athletic function possible and was very proud of his grandchildren. Along with farming full time, Joe drove bus for Maplewood Schools for twenty-two years. Joe served as a Mecca Township trustee for sixteen years. He loved to hunt rabbits, raccoon and deer. He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Nellie, Helen, Frances and Rose and his brother, Ted. Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Mary Elizabeth Letwen of Mecca, Ohio; a daughter, Barbara Jo Clemson of Johnston, Ohio and two grandchildren, Christen and Craig. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 10:00am at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main Street, Kinsman, Ohio with Pastor Tim McPheron officiating. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, November 18th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Mecca Township Volunteer Fire Department, 6333 State Route 46, Cortland, OH 44410.
