WILLIAMSFIELD- John Clark Armstrong, 90, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2025 in his home surround by loved ones. John was born February 19, 1935 at Youngstown Northside Hospital to Grace and Cleon Armstrong of Williamsfield, Ohio. The Armstrong's owned and operated a general store in Williamsfield until 1962.
John attended Williamsfield High School and graduated June 1953. He volunteered for active military duty ("draft'') and served from October 1954 to October 1956 with a year and a half at Ft. Richardson Army base at Anchorage Alaska.
In October 1956 John entered West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. And earned a Bachelor of Science Degree June 1, 1959 in Agriculture Education. John worked as a social worker at Weston State Hospital in Weston, W.Va. a year (1959-1960) before returning to Morgantown where a Masters Degree was earned in June 1962 in Vocational Rehabilitation.
On June 1,1959 John married Barbara J. Nottingham of Durbin, W.Va. Deborah and Scott were born to the couple in March 1962 and March 1966, respectively. Both children graduated from Tallmadge High School in Tallmadge, Ohio. Subsequently, they both earned bachelors degrees from the University of Akron, in Akron, Ohio. Deborah and Scott have two (2) boys (Joshua and Zackary and Nicholas and Noah, respectively). Deborah and her family reside in Lebanon, Tenn and Scott and his family reside in Munroe Falls, Ohio. Barbara earned a masters and a doctorate in 1962 and 1970.
The majority of John's working years were in Vocational rehabilitation in Ohio and W.Va. However, a one (1) year (1966-67) was spent as branch YMCA director in Newark, Ohio before serving as Student Personnel Assistant at Ohio State University (Newark and Columbus campuses) from 1967-1971. The final twelve (12) years (1980- 1992) of employment in rehabilitation were spent servicing the blind and visually impaired in Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning Counties from the Youngstown, Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission Office.
From 1994 to 2000 John operated a craft store in the former general store with an emphasis on Amish goods and crafts. The store became an antique shop in 2000 and operated as such for four ( 4) years.
On March 27, 2002, John married Ann C. Campbell of Williamsfield. John was a member of the Williamsfield "God's Church" , formerly Williamsfield United Methodist Church, and the American Legion Post 506 in Kinsman, Ohio.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30PM on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at Williamsfield Center Cemetery with Pastor Lyle Lipps officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to God's House of Williamsfield or the American Legion Post 506 in Kinsman, Ohio.
