Uncle John Nelson Franks passed away on November 14, 2013 at Silver Sands Assisted Living In Ashtabula, OH, surrounded by family. John was born December 16, 1930 in Shanty Town, Crucible, PA, to Edward Franklin Franks and Evelyn H. Reagan Franks. He was a 1950 graduate of Cumberland Twp. High School and was a drum major in the Cumberland Twp High School Marching Band. He worked at Willard Battery in Cleveland, OH and Kansas City, MO; Stouffer Frozen Foods, as a production manager, traveling extensively setting up their new broccoli and cheese lines in California and Illinois. He returned to Eastlake, OH where he helped set up their new plant in Solon. He then went to work at General Foods as production manager, for the cities of Boston and Pittsburgh, setting up their school lunch programs. Tiring of being in management and the food industry, he went to work at CEI in Cleveland, OH as a plant electrician and retired in 1990. After retirement, he owned and operated Uncle John’s Restaurant in Andover, Ohio. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. John enjoyed dancing, gardening, traveling, cooking and playing games on his computer. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gene Franks; stepfather, Earl Blevins; step brother, Ardiste Blevins; step sisters, Nadine Stevens and Avenell Ledgerton; nephews, Gene M. Franks, Jr. and John Grant Franks; nieces, Debra Ann Franks and Sandra Kay Metz; and great nephew, Alvin Lee Hill. He is survived by a brother, Grant (Garnet) Franks of Carmichaels, Pa; sister,Dorothy McCombs of Andover, Ohio; sister, Portia (Hymie) Fullgrabe of Springfield, IL; step sisters, Mary Jo Rutkosky of Rices Landing, PA and Pauline Garvin of LaGrange, KY. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Dawn (David) Hill; and Deanna (Joe) DiBell, both of Andover, OH; Debra Tuckish of Ashtabula, OH; Donald (Michele) Tuckish of West Palm Beach, FL; Dennis (Roxanne) Tuckish of Coral Springs, FL; Beth (Bill) Eggemeyer of Monticello, IL; and Will Fullgrabe of Wakeman, OH; David (Kathy) Franks and Michael Franks of Carmichaels, PA. Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a funeral service starting at 7:00 PM at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH. A graveside service will be on Tuesday, November 19th at 1:00 PM at the Church Hill Cemetery in McClellandtown, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Silver Sands Assisted Living, 3418 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, OH 44004 and/or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
