Cherry Valley, Ohio - John Savel, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at his son Mark's home where he resided. He was born on February 4, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of Elizabeth (Dragon) and Joseph A. Savel, Sr. Mr. Savel attended Pierpont High School until he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a radar man during World War II on two different ships. Mr. Savel worked for the former True Temper of Saybrook for forty-three years and then worked for Seeley Medical of Andover, Ohio for twelve years until he retired. On April 21, 1951 he married Ruth I Svec at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church where he has been a longtime member. Mr. Savel served as an usher for the church and belonged to the Men's group. He was also a member of the former Andover VFW Post No. 9519. Family was the most important thing in his life. Mr. Savel was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He had a great sense of humor and his smile and laugh could light up the whole room. Mr. Savel enjoyed sports and was a big fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cavaliers and Browns. He loved attending his grandchildren's basketball and baseball games and was proud of all his grandchildren's endeavors. Some of his favoriate things to do were to play with his great grandchildren, working in his garden, having campfires in the summer, listening to Polka and Big Band music. In his eariler years he enjoyed managing and coaching little league and on Sunday nights playing cards with his siblings at his parents home. Mr. Savel farmed for many years with his son Mark and daughter-in-law Denise and family and was known for his sweet corn and vegetable stand. He loved taking care of all the animals. Mr. Savel is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth I. Savel and a brother, George Savel. Survivors include his children, John A. Savel of Cherry Valley, Ohio, Monica R. (James) Gribus of Ashtabula, Ohio, James S. (Joey) Savel, Sr. of Jefferson, Ohio and Mark A. (Denise) Savel of Cherry Valley, Ohio; six grandchildren, Shannon (Ian) Ball, James (Clorissia) Savel, Jr., Jacob Savel, Sarah (Kevin) Chester, Rebecca (Shawn) McClure and Steven Savel; four great grandchildren, Braden Ball, Haylee Chester, Kevin Chester, Jr., and Logan McClure; two sisters, Betty Taylor and Millie Fenton and three brothers, Joseph (Nancy) Savel, Robert (Vony) Savel and Richard (Emily) Savel. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 11:00am at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Main Street, Andover, Ohio with Rev. Kevin McCaffrey officiating. Burial will follow in Cherry Valley Cemetery. Rosary will be said at 4:15PM before calling hours which will be held on Friday, November 4th from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service where a guestbook is available at www.baumgardnerfuneralhomes.com Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church or Hospice.
