Judge Robert Montgomery Platt, Jr., age 76, passed away on March 30, 2024, in, Cleveland, Ohio, following a brief illness. He was born on June 16, 1947, in Warren, Ohio, the son of Vera Demetruk (Krystal) and Robert Montgomery Platt, Sr.
Educated at Lakeview High School in Cortland and Otterbein College where he graduated with honors, Rob went on to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron Law School in 1974. Judge Platt's illustrious career began at Gessner & Platt Co, LPA in Cortland while he was still in law school, where he started by doing title work. Throughout his career, he was actively involved in seeing clients and served as the Law Director for both Cortland and West Farmington. In 2013, he was elected as Judge for Trumbull County Eastern District Court, serving for six years, a position he held with honor and dedication.
Outside of his professional life, Rob was known for his easy laughter and enjoyment of fun times with his family and friends. He had a passion for boating and spending quality time with four generations of family at Camp La' Plage in Ontario, Canada. His hobbies included playing golf at Bronzwood Golf Club in Kinsman, Ohio, indulging in boating and fishing activities, as well as being an avid reader. Rob was a member of the Mosquito Lake Power Squadron, making many lifelong friends, and many joyous memories boating on Mosquito Lake and the Alleghany River. He also belonged to the Mosquito Lake Yacht Club and the Cortland Conservation Club.
Rob is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Susan Lynne Richards, whom he married on August 23, 1969; his daughter, Wendy S. Platt of Alliance, Ohio; his son, Justin R. Platt of Cortland, Ohio; his sister, Carol L. Platt-Frey; as well as his three grandchildren, Andrew, Alayna, and Carlena. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Kerry S. Elliott.
The legacy of Judge Robert Montgomery Platt will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched through his remarkable contributions to the legal field and the cherished memories shared with family and friends.
