M. Ruth Smith

M. Ruth Smith, age 89, of Cortland,Ohio, formerly of Kinsman, died Thursday, November 11, 2010 at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, OH. She was born April 23, 1921, in Burnsville, North Carolina, a daughter of Latt W. and Fannie Mae (Duncan) Evans. A long time Kinsman resident, Mrs.Smith was employed by McClead Nursing Home and Boyd's Home, Kinsman. She served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a surgical technician. She was a member of the Kinsman United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Bayview Club in Kinsman; and a member of the Kinsman Fire Dept. Auxiliary since 1957. Mrs. Smith served as a Red Cross bloodmobile volunteer and she served on the Board of Elections. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, crocheting, and sewing. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Ralph H. Smith, whom she married August 5, 1950, of Cortland, Ohio; her daughter, Sharon J. Hopkins (Donald Jones) of Cortland,OH, with whom she made her home; her son, Ronald C. (Donna) Smith of Kinsman; her daughter, Elaine M. (Don) Mathews of Fowler, OH; her daughter, Margaret L. (James) Stiles of Emmett, MI; her daughter, Rebecca M. (Perry) Coxson of Kinsman; 12 grandchildren; 26 great greandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; and three brothers, Frank, William, and John Evans, all of Burnsville, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ned and Roy Evans; a son-in-law, Glenn Hopkins; 1 grandchild; and 2 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St., Kinsman, Ohio, with Rev. David McKinnon officiating. Burial will follow in Kinsman Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, November 14th from 2 to 4 P.M. at the funeral home.
