Andover, Ohio - Ralph G. Baker, age 77, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2009. He was born on February 2, 1932 in Andover, Ohio, the son of Clarence H. and Althea R. (Tripp) Baker. A lifelong resident, Mr. Baker was a 1950 Graduate of Andover High School and a 1956 Graduate of Bowling Green State University. From 1952 until 1954, Mr. Baker served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was an underwriter for Allstate Insurance of Cleveland for seven years. He owned and operated Ralph Baker Insurance Agency of Andover. Mr. Baker taught at both Pymatuning Valley Schools and Dorset Schools and was an agent under Ron Spieth for Spieth Reality. He served as mayor of Andover from 1966 until 1970 and helped establish a village hall at the former Railroad Station in Andover and was a part of developing the water and sewer systems in Andover. Mr. Baker was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Andover; the former Andover Masonic Lodge #506 F&AM and of the Percy D. Hyatt Post #226 American Legion where he was serving as the current Commander since 2002. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Glenna E. (Cole) Baker, whom he married on March 9, 1966. Two sisters, Mabel Smith and Martha Dodge, also preceded him. Survivors include six stepchildren, Corinne McMillin and Patty Mandeville both of Beckley, West Virginia, Debra Steffey of Raleigh, North Carolina, George Harvey of Andover, Ohio, Dr. Harold Harvey II of Beckley, West Virginia and Leigh Anne Brammer of Knoxville, Tennessee; four nieces, Linda Smith of Andover, Ohio, Althea Torbert of Cleveland, Tennessee, Charlotte Jones of Bradenton, Florida and Jean Lincoln of Greensboro, North Carolina; and many grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 3:00pm at Baumgardner Funeral Home 134 Prospect Street, Andover, Ohio. Calling hours will be held on Monday, from 1:00pm until the time of services. Private burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Percy D.
