Robert D. Hopp, age 83, of Jamestown, PA, died Sunday, October 18, 2009 at his home. He was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Lincoln, Illinois, the son of John H. and Clara (Redman) Hopp. A resident of Jamestown since 1990, Mr. Hopp was formerly of Greenville, PA. He was a graduate of Lincoln Community High School; and earned his Engineering degree from San Diego State University. Mr. Hopp earned his pilot's wings in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Okinawa when the atomic bomb ended World War II. He retired from Solar Turbine, where he worked on the Titan Turbine Engine that powered Apollo 11, the first manned rocket, launching it to the moon on July 16, 1969. Mr. Hopps' passions included aviation and ping pong; but his greatest love was his service for Christ. His salvation was Jan. 21, 1964; and his last church home was at Harvest Baptist Church in Greenville, PA. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mr. Hopp is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. (Williams), whom he married June 14, 1974, of Jamestown; his son, Randall B. Hopp of Newberry Springs, CA; his three daughters, Tina M. (Jim) Bassett of San Marcos, CA, Ann L. (Everett) Pearson of Adamsville, PA, and Nancy L. (David) Menapace of Chambersburg, PA; his sister, Geraldine M. Heinzel of Lincoln, IL; his brother, Jim W. (Diana) Hopp of Sun City West, AZ; his sister-in-law, Nita Hopp of Lincoln, IL; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous church brothers and sisters in Christ. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nettie Jane Worden; and three brothers, Paul R., Harold J.,and Donald E. Hopp. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the Harvest Baptist Church, 516 E. Jamestown Rd., Greenville, PA, 16125, with Pastor Jeremy McClain officiating. Burial will follow in Stateline Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, October 21st from 3 to 5 P.M. and 7 to 9 P.M. at Baumgardnner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St., Kinsman,OH 44428.
