Cortland, Ohio - Robert M. Platt, Sr., age 85, died on Sunday, May 9, 2010, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, in Warren, Ohio. He was born on November 18, 1924, in Warren, Ohio, the son of Olive R. (Montgomery) and Harry D. Platt. A resident of Cortland, Ohio, for the past forty-five years, Bob was a 1942 graduate of Leavittsburg High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a radioman on the USS Corry, a destroyer that was sunk on D-Day at Normandy, and later served on the USS Compton in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge from the Navy, Bob graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor degree and a Juris Doctorate degree. In 1954 he was admitted to the Ohio Bar and in 1958 together with the late John F. Gessner, Bob formed the law firm of Gessner & Platt Co., LPA and continued to practice law for fifty-six years. He was a member of the Ohio State and Trumbull County Bar Associations and had been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and served as Law Director for the City of Cortland for twenty-five years. On September 1, 1946 he married Vera Demetruk Krystal at the Second Christian Church of Warren, Ohio, where he remained a life member. In addition to practice of law, which he loved, Bob enjoyed boating, dancing, harness horse racing and flying. He held a private pilot�s license. Bob was a member of the United States Power Squadron, the Ohio Harness Racing Association, the Old Erie No. 3 Masonic Lodge of Warren, a co-founder of the Harbor Yacht Club of Ashtabula and a thirty-three year member of the Cortland American Legion. Bob is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harry D. Platt and Rodger W. Platt. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Vera K. Platt of Cortland, Ohio; a son, Attorney, Robert M. Platt, Jr. and wife Susan Richards Platt of Cortland, Ohio; two daughters, Carol L. Frey of Round Rock, Texas, and Kerry S. Elliott and husband Deland Elliott of Cape Coral, Florida; four grandchildren, Wendy (James) Orsine of Niles, Ohio, Justin Platt of Cortland, Ohio, Chelsea (Brian) Atkins of Gainesville, Florida and Bryan (Kelly) Wilmouth of Villa Platte, Louisiana; seven great grandchildren and two special caregivers, Patty Iser and Dottie Humphrey. A funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010 at 12:00 noon at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main Street, Kinsman, Ohio. Entombment will follow at Pineview Memorial Park in Warren, Ohio. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 1:00pm until 3:00pm and from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. with Masonic services at 5:30pm at the funeral home.
