Richmond, Ohio - Robert E. Slater, age 81, died on Friday, December 26, 2008, in Andover, Ohio. He was born on April 2, 1927, in Andover, Ohio, the son of the late Curtis Fay and Fannie L. (Endres) Slater. In March of 1945 he joined the United States Navy. He served in the South Pacific with the Seabees during World War II. Mr. Slater started his trucking career as a logger. He drove truck for over forty years retiring in 1992. He worked for the former Truesdell Trucking which became Mitchell Transport. Mr. Slater was a part-time farmer. He was a member of the Leon United Methodist Church, the Teamsters Local 377, and was the FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer twice. Mr. Slater collected John Deere paraphernalia and enjoyed NASCAR racing, attending auctions and spending time with his family. He, at one time, owned an Indian Motorcycle and a Diamond T truck and was also known to many as the "fixer upper". Mr. Slater is preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter Robin Slater. Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Leoma Jean Pebbles whom he married on July 28, 1948. Other survivors include four daughters, Rebecca J. (Ed) Switzer and Ramona J. (John) Johnson both of Andover, Ohio, Bonnie A. (Jeff) Mathews of Kinsman, Ohio, and Penny L. (John) Mattern of Sun City West, Arizona; three sons, Robert J. Slater of Richmond, Ronald E. (Bonnie) Slater and Allen F. (Teresa) Slater both of Andover, Ohio; two brothers, Richard S. (Elynne) Slater of Andover, Ohio and David C. (Judy) Slater of New Lyme, Ohio; and a sister in law Bernice Pebbles of Ashtabula, Ohio; fifteen grandchildren, Bill, Karen, Jaime, Angela, Megan, Ronnie, Robin, Ryland, Katie, Tim, Bryan, Tammy, John Ryan, Jeff and Heather; and seven great grandchildren, Alyssa, Carson, Mylee, Katelyn, Britney, Cortney and Brayden; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 11:00am at Leon United Methodist Church, Stanhope Kelloggsville Road, Richmond, Ohio, with Jason Hockran officiating.
