Robert M. Vickery, age 85, of Andover, Ohio, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at his home. He was born June 25, 1923, in Andover, the son of Robert J. and Zella V. (Mead) Vickery. A lifetime Andover resident, Mr. Vickery was a 1941 Andover High School graduate. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater with action in Okinawa. He had worked at the former General Electric plant in Andover and retired from Andover Industries in 1985. Mr. Vickery was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Andover; and was a Boy Scout leader as he was raising his sons. He enjoyed bird watching, especially the Purple Martins, camping with his family and friends, and being a member of the McDonalds coffee group while he was able. He also enjoyed traveling with the Bentley bunch on the many OD Anderson bus tours. He and Ruth had traveled with Neil and Ruth Bentley to every state in the country, including Alaska and Hawaii. Mr. Vickery and his wife operated "Vickery's Bed and Breakfast" in Andover since 1987 and have many dear friends from that venture. He is survived by his wife, Ruth M. (Bentley) Vickery, whom he married July 16, 1950, of Andover; his five sons, Robert (Betty) Vickery of Espyville, PA, Richard (Janet) Vickery of Madison,OH, Charles (Tammy) Vickery of Cherry Valley Township,OH, Brian (Vicki) Vickery of Holly Springs,NC, and Steve (DeeDee) Vickery of Espyville, PA; his one daughter, Laurie (Bunky) Jordan of Andover,OH; his two sisters, Wilda Peterson of Erie, PA, and Roberta Hill of Andover,OH; his fourteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; step father, Don B. Wibirt; brother, Ralph Vickery; sister, Marian Jenkins; and great grandson, Colton Raymond Vickery. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover, Ohio, with Rev. Vernon Palo and Rev. John Germaine officiating. A committal service will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Andover. Calling hours will be on Monday, May 4th from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
