Andover, Ohio - Roy W. Welder, age 75, died on September 9, 2008, at his residence. He was born on November 21, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Roy W. Welder and Barbara (Gergel) Sorchy. Roy was a 1950 graduate of East Tech High School in Cleveland, Ohio and attended the former Fenn College of Cleveland. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict on the USS Princeton. Roy was an engineer for Euclid Hitachi Corporation for over thirty years, retiring in 1988. After his retirement he did consultant work for them for many years. Roy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Chardon for over thirty years and in the past year was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church of Andover. He was a life member of V. F. W. Post #6519 of Chardon, Ohio, and past commander of Lake Geauga Co. Council. Roy was a member of the USS Princeton Association, a former member of the V. F. W. Post #3456 of Cleveland. He was a trustee for Chardon Township for eleven years. Roy enjoyed traveling, woodworking and was always available to lend a hand where needed. On April 11, 1959 he married Loretta J. Dostal. He is preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Paul Sorchy and a sister, Dorothy Schuster. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Loretta J. of Andover; four sons, Robert J. of Middlefield, Ohio, James E. (Shelley) of King, North Carolina, Joseph R. and Richard J. (Colleen), both of Chardon, Ohio; a brother Paul (Pat) Sorchy of New Port Richey, Florida and seven grandchildren, Adam, Rachel, Rita, Elly, Nicki, Amy and Christy. A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 401 North Street, Chardon, Ohio, with Rev. Timothy D. Kalista and Rev. Kevin McCaffrey officiating. The V.F.W. will be preforming military rites at the conclusion of the Mass at the church. A reception will be held at the Chardon V.F.W.,752 Water Street (Rt. 6) . Calling hours will be held at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Mass. In lieu of flowers make contributions to V.F.W. Ladies Aux. Post #6519 memorial fund, P.O.
